Home offices can offer many advantages. The primary benefits would be better time management and reduced overhead and expense. Another benefit would be a more comfortable home environment. For example, if one is tired and needs a break, a full size bed can be an inviting option for a quick afternoon nap. Another plus, is the potential for taking care of household issues, such as waiting for the cable repair man.
Home offices also offer a myriad of options for hosting clients and visitors. Most common areas are usually the kitchen table or living room. The can be ideal for conference or meeting rooms. Additionally, the added benefit of a furnished kitchen can be taken advantage of. Furthermore, dinner and other meals can be cooked during working hours. Access to a full range of appliances, such as a blender, delonghi oven, and full size freezer, is an added benefit.
Home offices are not without their shortcomings. Dedicating adequate home office storage space can be concern for some. For example, if one is in the manufacturing or supply type business, then space can be at a premium. For this reason, home offices are better suited for service type businesses as they ten to require less physical space.
Costs and expenses are a major benefit. A home office can lower business expense by removing rental fees and utility expenses. Furthermore, they can also be tax deductible, at least partially. Also, certain home purchases can be written off as business expenses. In the colder months, additional home space heaters can be considered a business expense. Any other enhancements or improvements that can benefit the business can also fall into this category.
Aside from the functional issues, there are peripheral factors to take into account. For example, the needs of other family residents should always be considered before taking any drastic steps. This can especially become an issue when a spouse, after spending countless hours at work, comes home. They would want the feel of arriving at home and not another office environment.
Hence, there are many advantages and disadvantages to take into account prior to deciding on a home office. The physical, functional, and expense aspects are only part of the equation. The effects of a home office on relationships and psyche are of equal if not higher importance. Also, one needs to plan a strategy of being able to escape work while still at home. This can be important for one’s own sanity.
