From the time I graduated high school, many years ago, I have always had an interest in court reporting as my field of choice, but my career was put aside while raising children as my priority for many years. I have always worked in clerical or customer service positions while raising my three children. Most of my working years were at UPS, until their downsizing. Now I have been in customer service for 5 years in the compound semiconductor business, which I do not find very interesting, but pays the bills.

It is time I worked in a field that I am interested in the most! Like many people, I have a constant need to learn, and expand my knowledge in a variety of fields that interest me. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management after my kids graduated high school in 2001. I continue to read books of interest, and take classes that interest me, most recently a piano class. I have always wanted to take a medical terminology course. When I saw Future MT’s online program, I decided this is something I can schedule on my own time, while taking care of family needs, working full-time, and training for a half-marathon again in January. I feel the job opportunity is there in the medical field. My sister is a General Practitioner, and it will come in handy to know the terminology, when she is discussing anything medical. The course is also a way to better understand the human body, to be aware of one’s own health conditions and other loved ones.

With the situation the economy is in, if my current employer would go under, I do not relish going to interview at another company for just any customer service job, especially with my Bachelor’s Degree. I feel this course will contribute to my pursuit in a CMT career since it is very well designed. With over 300 actual transcription reports, and it is encouraged to transcribe more than once, it is a great learning tool. The learning activities that include crossword puzzles, cognition, beat the clock and strikeout, are a great way to help with the memory by repetition. I feel am responsible to learn each chapter to the best of my ability, on my own, while correcting and checking my own work. It comes natural to me to be a speedy, accurate typist while using good grammar. SN:0MA9N2ESY

So far I have thoroughly enjoyed learning the spelling and definition of many new medical terms. I also have always had a keen interest in looking up information, and find the search for terms to be quite interesting! I do realize that at home medical transcription jobs are not that easy to come by, and in order to be hired, I will need 98% accuracy along with speed and proficiency. Also, experience will come in handy, and of course, that will not be behind me for one or two years down the road. I do have an interest to put my business management skills into practice, by starting my own business in the future. But for now, to work in an office setting and prove my skills or a home environment will be acceptable to me. I am looking forward to completing the course, receiving the Certificate of Completion, updating my resume, and finding out what medical transcription jobs are out there that I might be offered! At that time, I can make a decision about my current position, so as to have a Plan B in place!

I’ve worked for 2 Hospitals and it was a job that I loved.  I was able to learn the many types of medical procedures, concerns and terminology.  While working at the hospital I decided to take a medical terminology course offered by the hospital and passed with flying colors.  For the 2nd time in my life I felt like I had finally accomplished a life time milestone.  Then my sister in law passed away all of a sudden and my Dad was diagnosed with cancer that same year and passed away.  Granted these 2 people meant the world to me.  My sister in law was very healthy, trying to lose weight and was the life of the party passed out at home one morning and passed that evening. The doctors could not explain why this happened, but I was curious.  I asked my brother questions but he barely had any answers. Therefore I said God needed her more than us.

After receiving the news that my Dad was diagnosed with cancer I really became concerned because “cancer” was not a word heard often in my family.  I started looking up information about the disease.  After researching the condition I found all types of cancer and I became really concerned.  Even though I worked in a hospital I should have known about the different forms but it really didn’t affect me until my Dad was diagnosed with the illness. After seeing what my Dad had to go through during his illness and observing other patients and other family members when going in and out of the hospital on a daily basis my heart had such compassion that I wanted to do something in the medical field.  I knew I could not be a physician or a nurse because I’m too sentimental.  I’m one of those people who get attached to people and can become friends with them in a heartbeat.  I can’t take the heartache of losing someone I truly care about. Therefore I started editing/transcribing reports at the hospital.

My uncle is an anesthesiologist and his wife is a physician at want of our local hospitals and when I’m listening to them talk about their work experiences during the week I am all ears.  I’m almost like a kid looking at all the candy in the aisle available for me to eat.  Whenever I hear a new medical term or condition I’m on the internet looking up the information.  I guess I want to verify what I was told was correct and I want to know how the condition came about and how it is possibly cured.

My primary reason for working in at home medical transcription jobs is because I can work from home and have the ability of taking/picking up my girls from school.  My girls are 4 (preschooler) & 5 (Kindergarten) years old and they mean the world to me.  I rather be available for my girls every need rather than trying to find someone trustworthy enough to take my girls to school, pick them up from school and care for them before and after school, especially if they happen to fall ill or accidentally hurt themselves while away from home.  I always feel my responsibility in life is taking care of them and I want to be around for them every minute that I can spare.  I wasn’t around much for her because she lived in a different state. My Dad’s illness had such an effect on me that I wanted to keep learning more about the medical industry.  Working medical transcription jobs will also allow me to work while the family is away at school/work and I can work in the evening or night hours while they are asleep.

I did transcribed reports for my Aunt for a few months last year but after her medical group decided that “EVERYONE” had to use the same transcription company I could no longer transcribed reports for her.  Yes it most certainly broke my heart because I had to find a job and find someone to care for girls.

My reason for wanting to get more knowledge or training in the medical field is because I miss the field.  I had to resign from the hospital in 2004 due to pregnancy complications and after trying to return to work I was laid off and have been out of the medical industry ever since.  Becoming an MT has been a passion for me ever since my Dad’s illness and passing.  I was currently working as a school bus driver and I love it, but it was not what I wanted to do.  I looked up many online transcription courses but I am not able to afford thousands of dollars to become an MT.  One day while looking up WAH information on the internet I came across your website and I am very interested in becoming an MT. I believe I will gain more experience working as an MT.  At the hospital my duty was mainly editing transcribed reports and verifying patient information.  Whenever there was a line in the middle of a sentence because the transcriber did not understand what the physician reported it was my duty to listen to the transcribed report or contact the Physician/Nurse for the appropriate answer.  Since I have the ability of typing 50 wpm and I know I am capable of listening and typing at the same time I believe transcribing is the job for me. At this time my goal is to further my education in the MT career.  I want to learn all that I can lean and apply the knowledge I have gained to my MT career.  At this time I want to work for a company that hires transcriptionist who work from home because I ‘m not sure which transcription field I want to specialize.  Therefore I want to gain as much learning as possible and maybe in a few years down the road I can make a decision on transcribing as a contractor, starting my own transcription business for are physician offices or remain an employee of a transcription company.

Many answers enter my mind when asked the question why I want to become a medical transcriptionist.  First and foremost would have to be my family.  I have a husband and three wonderful children who are all under the age of 7.  I would enjoy more free time to enjoy my kids while they are still young.  Just the other day I heard another mother say “I can’t believe that I have already spent half my time with my daughter that I’m going to get”.  Not knowing exactly what the woman meant I asked her “what do you mean by that”?  She replied by saying “my daughter is nine and I have had her for half the time she will live with me.”  That really hit me deep to think that my twin daughters are six years old and like that mother, me and my husband have almost spend half our time with them.  Where the time has went and what have we as a family done?  Then I thought what if I had more time to give.  But how?  Then the answer came to me, why not look into medical transcription work at home.  I am and have for the past eight years worked as a physical therapist assistant (PTA)and have a good background for the medical jargon, MT should be a easy transition for me.

Like I just stated earlier, I am currently a PTA and love what I do, however I have noticed that in the last few months that I am getting stuck in a downward spiral at work, and may need a change of environment.  Then the big question hits, what, where, and how.  We are not financially stable enough for me to quit and return back to school or when would I find the time.  About a year ago, I tried to return to school and become a earlier education teacher online, but that was about impossible with a full time PTA and mother of three, I never had enough time for hitting the books.  The most appealing thing about getting a MT certified is the fact I can learn at my pace, no deadlines.  What is more perfect for a working mother?

At home medical transcription jobs would give me the opportunity to have a flexible schedule and continue to hold a job as a PTA and give me the chance to only work as a PTA at a PRN basis and give me that well deserved break I am looking for and need.

Where do I see my self as a MT?  Hum, good question.  I see my career as a MT to start of gradual then grow into something much more.  Hopefully given my family the relief from stress of the everyday struggles of the same old thing each day for the last eight years.  First step would be to obtain a certificate, get a job and hopefully build a new career.  One of the first steps after I start on receiving my certificate would be to help others along my path to freedom. In closing, I have chose becoming a MT for the following reason, more time with family, closely related to current job and flexibility of schedule.   Plus the ability to learn at my own pace.
