Google’s Adwords marketing platform, is certainly a web marketing tool that’s not to be taken lightly. It literally gives you the power to drive instant traffic to your website by targeting specific keywords. The quality of traffic you can get through Adwords using the right keywords can’t be underestimated, as you will get laser targeted visitors when you do things right. You can further boost your sales conversions if you use Adwords’ targeting features to focus on a country, a particular state or even a city. However, setting out on your campaign prior to gaining any knowledge and experience can lead you to make terrible mistakes. In the following passages we’ll take a look at three common errors that can drag your Adwords campaigns under.

1) Failing to Split Test

The great thing about PPC marketing is that a vendor has no doubt whatsoever exactly where his advertising budget is being spent. With the testing you can do using Google Adwords, you can enhance your campaigns and make them more profitable. However, if you do not take advantage of this testing feature, you are losing money and leaving money just lying around. With Adwords, you can split test without much effort, since you can rotate ads against one another and that allows you to see which ad is performing best. When you only run one ad, it is very difficult to know if it working as good as it could be. When you split test 2 ads at the same time, you can slowly weed out the poor performing ad and keep the better performing one, which not only improves the click-through rates and get higher conversions.

2) Focusing on Ineffective Keywords

Google Content Network is a place where other websites display Google ads. It is not part of Google or its partners. It is important to understand that there is no way to know if these home based business sites will be targeted towards your topic. Plus, they could be Adsense based, meaning the information on them is either not relevant or can be strong competition for you products. So what should you do? It’s a risk in simple terms as you might not get your return on investment even after spending gobs of money. Also, these ads aren’t easy to track. In other words, when you are starting your Adwords campaign, be sure to turn off the ‘content network’ and focus your efforts with Google and its partners. It is true that the content network has advantages, but it is not the place to start new campaigns.

3) Stuffing Too Many Keywords in One Single Ad Group

You need to make your landing page match your ppc ad. You can’t forget this one if you really want to make things happen with a marketing campaign. A common mistake by a lot of advertisers is not making sure the ad content matches up with the headline on their landing page. By making the two match, any potential customers can know they are where they want to be when they click through to your landing page. In effect, you will be able to increase your conversion rate.

When advertising with pay per click Google gives the advertiser two broad options. Advertising in search results, advertising in websites content or indeed many choose to do both. Advertising in search means that results are displayed in Google under the search result pages. Google content advertising applies to those websites who choose to incorporate “Adsense” into their websites. As adsense rapidly expands, it is now viewable on millions of web pages throughout the web. However, many advertisers are shunning this in favor of merely advertising in search results.

There are several reasons for this, and the first is trust. This has been a result of smaller websites, through to adsense empires choosing to embark on Click Fraud. Although this issue occurs in search it is far less dominant. Those who commit Click Fraud on search are those trying to weaken a competitor’s ROI. With Adsense the same applies, along with the website owner trying to increase his revenues using similar tactics.

Another reason why website owners are choosing to market out with content is the motivation of the buyer when he is on a website. Someone who is on a different website, other than the advertisers might be there for entirely different reasons. For example a website discussing the disadvantages of Adsense, would actually return adverts for those selling “Adsense Websites” for example. People may click on it, but they are unlikely to buy after reading a negative review. The other reason could be that the person on the adsense website was actually looking for what is the best color palette to use. The person therefore would not find the advert relevant, but might click on the advert in a care free manner.

Adsense websites are also often rejected by the advertiser because they feel it involves more administration. Checking through websites to see how relevant they are, and editing their bids to ensure they still appear on a page. With some words having a network of over 500 websites, it is surely a tedious and expensive task. Although this is the case, some find that their Adwords account proposes websites, that don’t support their keywords. The example which is ripe, are those advertising under legal phrases who appear on adsense websites “terms and conditions” and “privacy policy” pages.

Although many are rejecting content advertising, there are still those who feel it provides a similar ROI to search. A reason for this can be found through in the fact that more and more advertisers are only choosing search. As this occurs the advertiser has less competition so the price of the word reduces. Advertisers are also finding a good ROI from publisher’s websites who decide to actively promote the advertiser’s services within their content. An example of this can be realized from when someone is discussing printing services, and actually directly recommends the advertiser’s services. This is a positive move for both the publisher and the advertiser, and a good way for publishers to move forward. Despite this, publishers still have to remember, to not be too obvious in doing this, or savvy buyers will definitely calculate the publisher’s intention.

Another reason why advertisers are opting for content is to increase their scale, however this can also be done across other search engines. The fact however still exists that those who choose content advertising should choose the Google Adsense network. It is regulated far and above yahoo’s and others equivalents whilst its superior network of publishers means the advertisers will benefit from being able to spread their message through a diverse range of websites.

Despite Adsense being the best PPC content distributor, it certainly doesn’t compare to search for the advertiser. On search the leads are more qualified, more regulated, and less fraudulent. This has caused advertisers consistently choose search over content. Despite this advertiser’s should always test adsense and see if it can provide the ROI they are looking for. Some advertisers say that content provides a better return for their business than search. This varies, however in general search remains King for PPC advertisers.

There are three steps to get you setup ready to start
advertising, creating an account, writing your first ad and
submitting your billing information.

The first thing you need to do is sign up and get yourself a
google adwords account. To do that head over to the Google and
at the bottom of the screen click on the ‘Advertising
Programmes’ link at the bottom.

Then:

• Click into the Adwords homepage

• Click ‘try now’ at the top right of the screen

• Select the standard edition (you need to have an active
website for the standard edition, if you don’t have an active
website you are not really at the stage to start experimenting
with Adwords!)

• On the next screen it will ask you if you have a Google
account, you could have one for gmail, Google Adsense, Google
Analytics etc, all of them will give you a Google account which
you can enter at this step. If you really click the button that
says you don’t have an account and it will ask for some details
to make one for you.

• If you have used an existing Google account you can then sign
in to your brand spanking new Adwords account, if you
have created a new account then you need to click the
verification link in the email they don’t have one or want a
fresh account associated with Google Adwords (it is a lot easier just
to have one account trust me!) then have just sent you to
confirm you are the owner of that email address, then you can
sign in.

Then make up a dummy campaign to get started. When you
log in click on the ‘create my first campaign’ button and you
will be taken through the campaign setup process.

Just enter dummy information in, put in a dummy name, choose any
country, put in a fake ad (just fake not silly as if that makes
it to an editor you’ll be in their bad books!) and choose your
keyword as ‘123456789’ or similar so it will not actually show.

Once you have completed setting up your Adwords campaign it will show you
a summary screen where you can check everything is ok – then
click ‘continue to billing’ There you enter your billing
information, select your timezone and agree to the terms and
conditions, if you select direct debit payment you will have to
wait while that goes through the system, but the other options
mean you can start advertising straightaway.

Personally I use a credit card payment at the end of the month
for my Google Adwords account, but you also have the choice to do
prepay where you deposit money into your account for Adwords to
use, this will reduce any risks on your behalf as if you were to
accidentally leave an ad running that built up a huge bill then
with the credit card option you’d have to pay, if you used
prepay then the ad would just stop running after the money in
your account ran out.

Please remember that there is a 5 – $10 setup charge for your
account that they will bill you for after setup.

The choice is yours, but just make sure after you setup your
billing that you go to the ‘campaign summary’ page listed at the
top of the screen and tick the checkbox next to your dummy
campaign and delete it! Otherwise you may get charged for the
advert showing up!
